David Eugene Hackbarth, the son and youngest of 9 children, of August Herbert and Mabel (Graff) Hackbarth, was born on November 11, 1947, in Hampton, Iowa. He was raised and educated in Belmond, graduating from Belmond High School in 1967.

On June 23, 1973, Dave was united in marriage to Ellen M. Hanes at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove. The couple made their home on an acreage outside of Eagle Grove. Ellen preceded him in death on September 4, 2008. Dave was a supervisor for Boone Valley COOP/Farmland Industries, retiring in 1995 due to heart trouble.

Dave raised cock-a-poo and teddy bear puppies and enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and attending all of their school and sporting events. He was a member of Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.

Dave passed away on Saturday, May 12, 2018, at Rotary Senior Living in Eagle Grove at the age of 70 years. He was also preceded in death by his parents, Herb and Mabel Hackbarth; Sisters Barbara Hackbarth and Betty Swanson; brother, Herbert, Jr.; son-in-law, Michael Omvig; and three brothers-in-law. Survivors include his children: Cindy Hilpipre and husband Tim of Spirit Lake, Mike Hackbarth and wife Mindy of Eagle Grove, Amy Pederson of Eagle Grove, Bobbie Johnson and husband Tom of Gary, SD and Mitch Hackbarth and wife Angie of Spirit Lake; eight grandsons, seven granddaughters, five step grandsons, three step granddaughters; eight great-grandchildren; siblings: Shirley Southard (Leslie) of Clarion, Mary Lester of Clarion, Charlotte Pals (Norman) of Belmond, Kathryn Hoopingardner of Rowan and Lester Hackbarth of Clarion.

Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 16, 2018, at Samuel Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Pastor Richard Taylor officiating. Visitation is Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m., at the Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Rose Hill Cemetery. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.

David E. Hackbarth, 70, Eagle Grove, died May 12, 2018. He was a member of the Belmond H.S. Class of 1967. David was the youngest of nine children born to Herb and Mabel Hackbarth. He married Ellen Soppeland in 1973, and they had five children.  He is survived by his children and his siblings Shirley (Leslie) Southard of Clarion, Mary Lester of Clarion, Charlotte (Norman) Pals of Belmond, Kathy Hoopingarner of Rowan, and Lester Hackbarth of Belmond.
