Omaha, Nebraska --- Marjorie Eileen (Smith) Ellsworth, “Midge,” passed away on Friday, April 27, 2018 at age 96. She was born on September 2, 1921 in Clarion, Iowa. She was the daughter of Eva Mildred Sturgeon and Granville William Smith. She had three brothers, Jesse, Phil and Rich, and one sister, Jean Robinson of Elmhurst, IL who survives her.
Midge grew up in Clarion, where her father owned a furniture store and was active in the community. In 1939, when she was 17, she was chosen Queen of Clarion High School. She represented her town in the North Iowa Band Festival. The festival was gay and exciting as each school Queen rode in the parade along with 48 bands and beautiful floats. At noon, the young women were guests at an elegant luncheon. As each spoke a few words, they were judged by the Queen Committee. Marjorie was named the Queen of the Festival! It was a wonderful memory and one of the highlights of her life.
Marjorie was married to John A. “Jack” Ellsworth for 48 years. He passed away in 1992. She is survived by her children: John (Jane), Tim (Josie), and Molly (Kirby Carter). There are eight grandchildren: Tony, Sarah, Hannah, Emily, Jay, Charlie, Andy, and Jack. There are nine great-grandchildren: Austin, Alexa, Blaze, Abigail, Clara, Teddy, Hannah, Nate, and Amaya; and one great-great-grandchild, Elora. She was a loving wife and a warm, friendly, and beautiful lady whose life was centered in her family. She was active in Dundee Presbyterian Church as President of the Women’s Association and a member of a church circle. Hers was a life well lived and she will be missed.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 11th from 4pm to 6pm at the West Center Chapel. A private family service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, friends are encouraged to consider a gift to Dundee Presbyterian Church, the Open Door Mission, or Lauritzen Gardens.
