Joan Marie Huston of Boise, Idaho passed away suddenly and unexpectedly at St. Luke’s Medical Center, Meridian on March 31, 2018. She was born in Clarion, Iowa, to E. J. and Beryl (Rossow) Blumeyer, on February 24, 1956. She met her husband, Donald (Don) Huston at Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa, in 1975, and they were together from that moment forward. The couple wed in 1978, following Joan’s graduation from Wartburg College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Early Childhood Education. From there, Joan went on to become instrumental in the establishment of three childcare centers providing education in the human services field – always with a keen and loving focus on care and positive outcomes for children in need. These efforts culminated in 1989, with the establishment of her own childcare business, The Children’s Place, which successfully operated in West Des Moines, Iowa, until her retirement in 2015. Over 26 years of operation, “The Center” earned four national accreditations for excellence in child care and educational curriculum, and Joan earned great recognition as her programs positively impacted thousands of children – not to mention the hundreds of people she employed and instilled with great career and educational skills.

Despite battling arthritis from the time she was in college, Joan loved to be outdoors and explore. She often went on hikes and enjoyed camping with her kids and grandkids. She was deeply dedicated to sharing time with all and finding a laugh in the silly things she encountered. In recent years, she had become a fixture in the lives of her grandchildren, patiently assisting with schoolwork, playing with baby toys, and guiding new parents. Joan was always supportive of every endeavor, participating in or transporting to countless practices, games, and tournaments across the country. She could often be heard as the loudest voice in the bleachers, screaming words of encouragement for all to hear. Joan offered her efforts and finances generously to many charities and causes she believed in. She also loved to travel, spending time in Mexico, the Caribbean, on many cruises, and all over the United States. And she loved Idaho, cherishing its natural spaces and proximity to the beauty she enjoyed so much. She was proud to call a beautiful, conservative family community, like Boise, her home for nearly 20 years.

Anyone who knew Joan understood that she was ready to jump in and help at a moment’s notice, offering whatever skills and resources she had available. She was loyal to a fault - and you didn’t want to be on her bad side because she would let you know. She was known for visiting neat places or new stores and buying small tokens of love or interest just to show she was thinking of those she loved – and she loved to collect fun, beautiful, and educational things knowing how appreciated they would all be at some point. Joan always gave everything of herself to help anyone in need, and she expected the same from those around her. She was the best. We were all better with her in our lives. We were uniquely blessed to spend the time we did with Joan. Our lives will be forever better because of it, and she will be missed tremendously for the rest of our time on this Earth.

Joan is survived by her husband, Don Huston, her sons, Jon and Matt, her daughter, Abby, her daughters-in-law, Jenn and Mikaela, and her grandchildren, Gabe, Jaden, Sabastian, Briggs, and Sierra. She is also survived by her sisters, Barbara (Bob) Folkmann, Beverly (Bob) Jass, Jean (Larry) Long, and Amy (Randy) Roggenburg, along with many nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grand-nephews. Joan was preceded in death by her father (E.J.) and mother (Beryl), as well as her beloved niece (Johnna) and nephew (Nathan).

A visitation for Joan will be held at Bowman Funeral Parlor, 10254 W. Carlton Bay Drive, Garden City, Idaho, 83714, Thursday, April 5, from 5 to 7pm. A memorial service will be held in her honor at the same location, Friday, April 6, 2018, from 2-4pm, with a small reception to be held at the Huston family home following the service.

We kindly thank the staff at St Luke’s Medical Center, Meridian for their care and focused effort. Joan had a profound and positive impact on those she met - and far beyond. That legacy will live on forever and she would be very proud; her family certainly is.
