Former Dows Man Succumbs at 96

Dows - John Erickson, 96, a former Dows resident died at Joel, Wisconsin, Jan. 2, 1938. He was born August 22, 1841, in Hageland Parish, Norway, and was married to Bertha Iverson in 1868. They came to the United States in the spring of 1869 and lived on their farm in Oakland Township near Dows till 1904 when the family moved to Dows. Mrs. Erickson died in 1907. In 1910, Mr. Erickson moved to Joel, Wisconsin, to the home of his daughter, Mrs. Ollie Conover, where he died.

He leaves two daughters, Mrs. Emma Evans of Doliver and Mrs. Ollie Conover of Joel, Wisconsin, who is spending the winter in Los Angeles, California. One daughter, Mrs. Mary Peterson, ..., died August 2, 1904. He is also survived by one brother, Gilbert Erickson, of Thompson, nine grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren.

The funeral was held Thursday afternoon at the Lutheran Church in Dows. The burial was at the Otis Grove Cemetery.

Mr. Erickson was one of the earliest of the pioneers of this part of the country and is believed to have been one of the few remaining charter members of the Otis Grove Congregation established about 65 years ago.
