Sam Fleener, Jr., 84, of Fort Dodge, died March 5, 2018 at the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home. Memorial services will be held 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Trinity United Methodist Church. Interment will be held in the French Church Cemetery, Woolstock. Visitation will be held after 6:00 p.m Wednesday with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. at Gunderson Funeral Home & Cremation Services.
Sam Fleener, Jr., the son of Samuel and Wilma (Schlenker) Fleener, was born February 15, 1934 in Oskaloosa, IA. He graduated from Albia High School and later Tarkio College in Tarkio, MO. Sam also served in the U.S. Army from July 24, 1958 to July 22, 1960. On February 2, 1963, Sam was united in marriage to Rita Deyo. The couple lived in Des Moines, Dayton and Fort Dodge. Sam was a chemist employed with the Fort Dodge Labs for over 40 years, retiring in 2004. He was an active member with Trinity United Methodist Church. He was a member of the Dayton Lions Club. He enjoyed Monday luncheons and Wednesday coffee with fellow retirees. Sam spent many hours learning at the Fort Dodge Library. He treasured spending time with his family and will be remembered as always attending his kids and grandkids school events.
Survivors include his wife Rita; his children Luke (Kris) Fleener of Duncombe, Katrina (Chris) O’Brien of Fort Dodge; his grandchildren Sabrina Fleener, Mason and Brady O’Brien; his sister Lea Weldon and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, his siblings John Fleener, Wilma Shellburg, James Fleener and Jane Vitko and nephew Nick Weldon. Memorials may be directed towards the French Cemetery Fund or the Paula J. Baber Hospice Home.
