August 20, 1936 --- November 9, 2017

Melvin Ammerman, 81, of Sheffield, passed away, Thursday, November 9, 2017, at the Sheffield Care Center. A Service of Remembrance will be held 5:00 p.m., Sunday at Retz Funeral Home, Sheffield. Visitation will be 2:00 – 5:00 p.m., Sunday at the funeral home. Interment will be at Hillside Cemetery in Sheffield. In lieu of flowers Mel’s family suggests memorials to the American Lung Association in his memory.

Melvin Henry Ammerman was born August 20, 1936, on a farm southeast of Meservey, a son of William and Emma (Nagel) Ammerman. They moved to the Sheffield area and Mel graduated from Sheffield High School in 1955. Mel was married to Oletha Koch, they were blessed with 3 daughters.

Mel worked at the Farmer’s Coop for 6 years and started farming with his father in 1963. He also farmed many years with Christian Horstman, whom he considered a second father. He served on the Elevator Board and in the Army Reserves for 6 years. Mel retired in 1997 and moved into Sheffield in 2007.

He enjoyed farming, but also spending time with his grandkids and friends fishing and golfing. He was known for a good sense of humor and while he was able, working with the American Legion especially on Memorial Day. He was dedicated and loyal to his friends, especially Dick and Lou Brown and Wayne Dahley who helped him stay independent in his home as long as he could.

Left to cherish his memory are his daughters: Teresa (Eric) Sept, Twin Falls, ID; Debbie (Greg) Horton, Twin Falls, ID; Jodi (Aaron) Johnson, Weiser, ID; 7 Grandchildren: Jennifer (Derek) Biggers; Holly (Jared) Grimm; Erica (Mike) Urie; Kristin (Greg) Huddleston; Katelin Horton; Luke Johnson; Trinity Johnson; 9 Great Grandchildren and many good friends. Mel is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald.
