Robert Lawrence Koob, the son of Merrill and Esther Sinn Koob, was born at Livermore, Iowa, on March 27, 1923. He grew up and received his education in the Dakota City-Humboldt area.
On February 27, 1943, he entered the U.S. Army and served in Normandy, Northern France, Ardennes, Rhineland and Central Europe and received his discharge on Dec. 10, 1945. He was united in marriage with Betty Wolff at Fort Dodge on November 10, 1943, and to this union were born eight children. The family lived in Eagle Grove and he was employed at the Hemp Plant for two years and in 1947, he joined the Eagle Grove Police Department and was a member of the force for over 25 years and served as the Chief of Police for several years until 1972. He was employed for several years at a service station in Eagle Grove and had been semi-retired because of his health. He was a longtime member of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove.
He died of a heart condition early Friday morning, July 20, 1984 at the family home in Eagle Grove at the age of 61 years, 3 months and 23 days.
He is survived by his wife Betty; his sons and daughters, Michael of Lakewood, Calif.; Linda Nikkei of Clarion; Mrs. Robert (Pam) Reekie of Eagle Grove; Mark of New Haven, Ky.; Penny Lehman of Hodgenville, Ky.; Brian of Eagle Grove; Terry of Eagle Grove and Debra Murphy of Eagle Grove; 13 grandchildren; five sisters, Mrs. Carl (Maxine) Sweeting and Mrs. Mildred Wagner, both of Iowa City; Mrs. Merle (Vivian) Heidt of Humboldt; Mrs. Don (Esther) Higgens of Gilmore City; Mrs. Lyle (Margie) Kraut of California; five brothers, Merle of Humboldt; Bruce and Keith, both of Dakota City; Kenneth of Bradgate and Jimmy, who lives in Texas, and other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral services for Robert L. (Bob) Koob, 61 of Eagle Grove, were held on Monday, July 23, 1984 at 1:30 p.m. at the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Eagle Grove with Rev. Paul Schaedig officiating. Military Honors were conducted by the members and officers of the Eagle Grove Veterans Organizations at the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home on Sunday.
