Diane Kathleen Carlson was born April 26, 1934 in Norway, Iowa, the daughter of Reverend Walter E. Carlson and Solveig (Moen) Carlson. She attended various schools in Iowa and Illinois, graduating high school at Waldorf Academy in 1952. She continued her education receiving her teaching degree at Waldorf College in Forest City, IA. She taught two years in the Clarion Public Schools and 1 year at Osage Public Schools.

While teaching in Clarion, she met the love of her life, Donald Schroeder. They were united in marriage on July 6, 1957 in Stanhope, Iowa by her father, Reverend Walter E. Carlson. Their first home was in New Jersey. Don worked for Western Electric and Diane was a substitute teacher. They soon moved back to Clarion where they established their home. They worked side by side in their electrical business and raised a wonderful family of three children: Steve, Missy and Charlie.

Diane started substitute teaching when the children were in school. She loved to teach music to all ages of children. She taught piano lessons for over 15 years and had more than 50 students through the years. She also helped multiple students earn their GED while teaching for ICCC, GED program in Clarion. Her love of teaching continued when she helped get Kids Korner preschool started and she was one of their first teachers. She was one of the original founders of Festival in the Park and continued to serve on the planning committee for several years.

Don and Diane were partners in life. They were devoted members of First Lutheran Church in Clarion, IA. Through the years Diane was active in the choir, youth group and various other ministries. They had a cabin at Elm Lake and enjoyed many family and friend times there. They have been Winter Texans for 22 years until her health did not allow her to travel. They have been to all but 3 states in their travels. Her most beloved trip was a trip to Malda, Norway, the birthplace of her mother, Solveig Carlson. She was able to return to her mother’s childhood home and lie in the room where her mother was born. She was a tough Viking until the end.

Diane is survived by her loving husband Donald Schroeder, three children, Steven Schroeder of Johnson City, Texas, Missy (Mark) Huling of Garner, Iowa, Charlie Hammel (Bill Brown) of Floris, Iowa; grandchildren, Megan (Chad) Baker and their children Emma, Koen, Kennedy, and Avery, Cassandra (John) Leslie, Jessica (Andrew) Noe and their child Virginia, Tyson (Laura) Huling, Mataya Huling, Jennifer Covington and her children Amaya, Jayla, Trey and Aliyah, Logan Hammel and his children Harmony and William, Patrick Hammel (Dana Schultz) and their children Celeste, Mia and Aiden; brother Walter Carlson, and sister Mary (William) Johnson, special family friend and “other” daughter Julie Thompson, and many other family members and friends.
