Ronald L. Symens, 78, Sheffield, Iowa died November 28, 2017 at Franklin General Hospital in Hampton while under hospice care. Services were held Dec. 2 at First Reformed Church in Meservey. Interment was at Hillside Cemetery, Sheffield.

Ronald Luverne was born January 15, 1939 in Hampton to Edward and Eunice (Hovey) Symens. He graduated from Hansell High School in 1956 and attended Central College in Pella for two years. Then he worked for Wolf Trucking in Latimer. Ron married Donna Suntken on Aug. 22, 1959. To this union three children were born. Ron started farming in 1960 in the Alexander, Meservey and Sheffield areas. He enjoyed being an umpire for baseball and softball for 25 years. Ron was a member of First Reformed in Meservey where he taught Sunday school, Catechism, sang in the choir, and was on the consistory for many years. He had been active in the Sheffield Lions Club for several years. Ron retired from farming in 2012 and moved into Sheffield in 2014.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother John Symens; sister Audrey Jurgens; and daughter-in-law Lisa Symens. Ron is survived by his wife Donna; son Brian (Sue) Symens of Hampton and their children Elizabeth and Ben; daughter Linda Dippel and her son Nathan of Belmond; son Mark (Amy) Symens of Sheffield and their children Michael (Megan), Zachary, Spencer, Reese and Mitchell; brother Murrel (Rosie) Symens of Hampton; sister Rhoda (Ralph) Bender of Marshalltown; sisters-in-law Gene (Symens) Royster of Duncombe, Madonna Neuberger of Klemme and Janet (Derald) Pals of Belmond; and brother-in-law Jim (Dianna) Suntken of Belmond.
