ROZEL, Kansas - Susan Gwynne Elmore was born on January 19, 1950, in Lawrence, Kansas to Leland Robert and Gwynne (Kyle) Johnson. She grew up in Wichita, Kansas. Susan died at the Hays Medical Center on Saturday, September 23, 2017. Susan graduated from Southeast High School in Wichita, Kansas and went on to receive her Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Emporia State University in Emporia, Kansas. She also held a Master of Science in Elementary Education which she received from Wichita State University, in Wichita, Kansas. On July 3, 1982 Susan married Rev. Eldon Lewis Elmore.

Susan did her student teaching at Sunnyside Elementary in Wichita, Kansas. She taught 1st grade at Southwest Elementary, in Pratt, Kansas, and 2nd and 3rd grade at Arkansas Avenue Elementary in Wichita, Kansas until 1982. Susan was a substitute teacher and Chapter 1 Reading Teacher for Harper Elementary, in Harper, Kansas. Susan also was a substitute teacher for school districts in the Renwick, Iowa area. Susan was passionate about education, and shared her wisdom and knowledge with many young and upcoming teachers.

Susan enjoyed a change of vocation as the Director of Food Services at Forest Lake Baptist Camp and Conference Center from 1998 to 2005, outside of Ottumwa, Iowa.

Susan was very active in the churches where her husband was pastor. She served as a pianist and Sunday school teacher, a member of the American Baptist Women, and volunteered to help out with many different church and community functions. She was a Girl Scout leader in Tribune, KS and Harper, KS.

Susan was also an active volunteer at Rainbow Acres, in Camp Verde, Arizona, accompanying the choir, assisting with the care of the horses and helping with therapeutic riding lessons, filling in as the receptionist/secretary, and assisting wherever she was needed around Rainbow Acres.

She enjoyed several different hobbies, including reading, sewing, knitting, crocheting, and was an excellent baker. One of her favorite stories to read and collect was The Night Before Christmas. Susan also enjoyed playing different board games, solving crossword puzzles and cryptograms. She grew to have an appreciation and enjoyment of traveling by train due to her husband's love of trains.

Survivors include: her daughter, Amy Elmore of Rozel, Kansas; brothers, Leland (Barbara) Johnson of Wichita, Kansas, Douglas (Christi) Johnson of Centennial, Colorado; sister, Margaret Johnson of Kiowa, Kansas; brothers-in-law, George (Kay) Elmore of Larned, Kansas, and Karl Elmore of Rozel, Kansas.

Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, October 21, 2017, at Beckwith Mortuary, Larned, Kansas, with Rev. Margaret Johnson presiding. Friends may sign the register book from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday and Friday at the mortuary. Inurnment will be in the Larned Cemetery, Larned, Kansas.

Memorials are designated for the Adopt-a-Rancher program at Rainbow Acres, Camp Verde, AZ, and American Baptist Women's Ministry Endowment Fund in care of Beckwith Mortuary, Box 477 Larned, Kansas.
