Cornell Hugh Deeny, the son of Francis P. and Loretta R. (Nienhaus) Deeny, was born on September 27, 1918, on a farm near Jackson Junction, Iowa. He was raised and educated in the area of his birth, graduating from Waucoma High School in 1938. In 1939 Cornell enlisted in the US Navy and received an honorable discharge that same year. On June 29, 1943, Cornell was united in marriage with Laura Brenner and the couple made their home in Waucoma, Panora and Storm Lake, moving to Eagle Grove in 1949.
Cornell was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus. He was also a former member of Rotary Club – serving as President and was involved with opening the Rotary Ann Home. Cornell enjoyed playing golf, bridge and traveling – he and Laura travelled to Russia, Western Europe, South America, Japan, Israel and made boat trips on the Volga River, through the Panama Canal and along the Alaska Coast. Cornell was the owner and operator of D&B Motors Inc. in Eagle Grove for 36 years. He received many awards and trophies for his restoration of his 1939 Ford.
Cornell passed away on Thursday, October 19, 2017, in his home, at the age of 99 years. He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Laura in 2012; three brothers, Charles, Donald and Bernard; two sisters, Patricia Balk and Germaine Gibney and daughter-in-law, Tsehaye Deeny. Survivors include his three children: Daniel H. Deeny of Kirksville, MO, Brian Deeny and wife Chizuko of Fort Collins, CO and Sharon K. Deeny of Cork, Ireland; five grandchildren: Beza, Sheldon, Margot, Veronika and Nadya; two sisters, Marcella Stallman of Cedar Rapids and Marion Broghammer of West Union and many nieces and nephews.
Mass of Christian Burial will be held Wednesday, October 25, 2017, at 10:30 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Eagle Grove, with Father Jerry Blake officiating. A Rosary Service will be held at 4:30 p.m. with visitation from 5 to 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Foust Funeral Home in Eagle Grove. Burial will be in Calvary Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Memorials may be left to Rotary Senior Living.
