Walter J. Benson, 80, Belmond, died September 12, 2017 at Trinity Regional Hospital in Fort Dodge from stomach cancer. A celebration of life will be held Saturday, November 11 from 1-3 p.m. at the Leinbach Center in Belmond. A family graveside service will be held at the Melbourne (IA) Cemetery.

Walter Jerry was born March 27, 1937 in Marshalltown, the son of Emery and Ruth (Luthi) Benson. Walter earned a BA in business administration and accounting from Buena Vista College and completed three courses from Cornell.  He honorably served his country as an E-3, Personnel Specialist in the United States Army (1960-1962) and an E-6 in the Active Reserves (1963-1964). Walter was a member of the Elks Lodge and served as Exalted Ruler and Trustee. He was also a member of the Moose Lodge and the Catholic Church.   

Walter was employed in the grocery industry as an owner, manager and co-manager. He married Joan Templeman Wilhite on November 27, 1964. They were married for 22 years and later divorced. He was preceded in death by brothers Robert Larry Benson and Raymond Benson (infant); and sister Mary Ellen Terry. Walter is survived by his two daughters and two sons Theresa Patterson of Marshalltown, Jill (Bill) Maxwell of Carmichael, CA, John (Brenda) Benson of Union, and Jeff Benson of Long Beach, CA; six grandchildren; ten great grandchildren; sister Clara Kistenmacher of Holstein; and his best friend Gerald Madison of Goodell.
