Effie Lea Johnson passed away peacefully at home in Alameda, Calif., on Aug. 17, 2017, at the age of 83. Her loving husband, Harold Duane Johnson, was at her side.

Effie was born in Kanawha, Iowa, on Dec. 3, 1933, to Ora and Opal Johnson. She and her loving husband moved to Alameda in 1960 and purchased a beautiful Victorian that was built in 1890. They spent many enjoyable hours fixing up their home and making it into a showplace.

Effie is survived by her husband, Harold Duane Johnson, and their two daughters, Sheila Johnson and Leanne Johnson. She is also survived by her grandson, Willard “Billy” Garoutte, son of Sheila Johnson; his wife Sarina Garoutte, and their three children, Brittany, Dylan and Kekoa. Effie is also survived by two great-grandsons. Effie was born into a family of 10 children and is survived by her sisters, Sheryl and Ioleata, and brothers, Arlan and Ronald, all living in Minnesota and Iowa.

Effie enjoyed collecting unique antiques that she labored hours restoring. She was very creative, making Christmas wreaths and other beautiful items. She loved gardening and music. She enjoyed playing the piano and accordion and singing in the church choir.

The family requests that donations in her memory be made to the Alzheimer’s Association or Kidney Foundation. She will be terribly missed and loved forever. A small gathering of family and friends held services for Effie last Saturday.
