Wright County Mourns the Passing of D. D. Paine
Was Born in this County 79 Years Ago

His Birth was First White Boy Recorded in the County Clerk's Office. Funeral Held Monday

The funeral of David D. Paine was held from the Wilson funeral home Monday afternoon. Rev. Albert S. Kilbourn officiated. Mrs. Fannie Cotton sang "Face to Face," with Mrs. C. E. Middleton, accompanist. R. C. Blue conducted the Masonic service, assisted by C. M. Spangler. Burial was in Rose Hill cemetery.

David Draper Paine, the eldest son of Nathaniel Baker and Amanda Hewett Paine, was born March 19, 1856, at the old Paine homestead, 2 1/2 miles northwest of what is now Eagle Grove. He passed away at his home Friday evening, January 24, 1936, his age at time of his death being 79 years, 10 months, 4 days.

He received his formal education at the little red school house south of what is now the Paine school. Being of an inquiring mind and a great reader, he became one of the best informed men in the county. He was for 12 years in school in the county, 6 years of which he was county superintendent of schools. For some years he was also a member of the county board of supervisors.

On November 7, 1879 he was united in marriage to Miss Orvilla [Orilla] Middleton of Eagle Grove. To this union six children were born, two girls and four boys. One girl, Katie, passed away in infancy, the other surviving children are: Mrs. Magnus Hansen of Goldfield, Raymond of Eagle Grove, Roger and Morris of Ree Heights, So. Dak., and Paul of Minneapolis, Minn. Mrs. Paine passed away in March, 1914. On August 18, 1915, Mr. Paine was united in marriage to Miss Anna Middleton of Brady, Neb.

Besides the widow and the children named, there remain to mourn their loss, 31 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren, three brothers, Warren, Frank and John, all of Eagle Grove, besides numerous nephews and nieces.

While farming operations were his chief concern, he achieved an enviable reputation as a contractor and builder. He built 31 buildings in Eagle Grove, including what are now known as the Armbrustor and Hobbet residences. With his brother, John Paine, he built the Paine block. Wherever he lived he built. Not only was this true in Eagle Grove, but in Ree Heights, South Dakota, as well.

He was a member of the Eagle Grove Congregational church and Bower Lodge A.F. and A.M. and the Eastern Star.
