J. Max Powers age 88, of Pocahontas, passed away Monday, Sept. 4, 2017, at the Pocahontas Manor Care Center in Pocahontas, Iowa.

John Maxwell Powers was born August 29, 1929, at Lake City, Iowa. He was the son of Francis Vern and Alyce Mae (McGinty) Powers. Max attended country school, he then graduated from St. Francis Catholic Grade School in 1944 and from Rockwell City High School in 1948. He farmed with his brother Dwayne until 1951 when he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He was stationed at Alexandria, LA and Pope Air Force Base near Ft. Bragg, North Carolina. On June 25, 1953, Max married Anne L. Donahoe at Clare, Iowa. They made their home in Eagle Grove where Max was employed at the Wilson Funeral Home and attended Eagle Grove Community College. Max went on to the Cincinnati College of Mortuary Science, Cincinnati, Ohio, graduating in 1955. He returned to Eagle Grove to serve his internship at the Wilson Funeral Home. In 1956, Max moved with his family to Woodbine where he was employed for the J. O. Heff and Son Furniture and Funeral Home. In August of 1957, Max and Anne purchased the Rudolph Funeral Home in Pocahontas. They settled in Pocahontas where they raised their family and were active in the community. They conducted business from the uptown location until 1960 when they purchased the Troidal home, where they resided and operated the funeral business. In 1976, a new funeral facility was constructed. Max semi-retired in November of 1999.

Max was a member of the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church, the American Legion, AmVets, Kiwanis and the Pocahontas Golf Club. He was a Past Grand Knight of the Knights of Columbus. He served on the Pocahontas Fire Department and the Pocahontas Airport Commission. Max enjoyed golfing, traveling, wintering in St. Thomas and growing and giving away sweet corn. Max was a devoted husband and father who enjoyed spending time with his family and friends.

Survivors include his wife of 64 years, Anne; children, Mike (Susan) Powers of Anna Maria, FL; Diane (Dennis) Ferguson of Pocahontas; Pam (John) Harr of Golden Valley, MN; Mary Anne (Bob) Fitzpatrick of Medfield, MA; Pat Powers of Pocahontas; John (Ann) Powers of Orlando, FL; Joe (Karla) Powers of Creston; Kenny (Jill) Powers of Pocahontas; Kathy (Andy) Hickey of Elmhurst, IL; Tim (Dee) Powers of Lisbon and Tom (Julie) Powers of Matthews, NC; 28 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. Max was preceded in death by is parents; brothers, Michael Powers and Dwayne Powers; infant sister, Rosemary; son-in-law, Al DeVaul; sister-in-law, Joan Powers and a grandson, Stephen Powers.

Please note that the visitation will be at the Resurrection of Our Lord Catholic Church rather than the funeral home.
