Mary Mildred (Nelson) Axon, the daughter of George and Mary (Leffler) Nelson, was born on May 1, 1928, in Goldfield, Iowa. She was raised and educated in the area of her birth, graduating from Goldfield High School in 1945. Mary then attended Eagle Grove Junior College and received her teacher's certificate and taught in the Liberty Township Country School for two years.

On April 30, 1949, Mary was united in marriage with Kenneth W. Axon at the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield. The couple made their home on the family farm in Goldfield; where they farmed, raised livestock and Mary was a very busy homemaker raising four daughters. She loved being around her family and their children. They were the joy of her life and always brought a smile to her face. Mary had a passion for her flowers and gardening, a burst of color could regularly be found around her homes.

Mary was an active lifetime member of the United Presbyterian Church and served as a Sunday school teacher and Superintendent, held many offices in U.P.W. and was a session member. She was a strong Federated Women's Club member – both local Bayview Study Club and State Federated Club, where she held several offices. Mary was also a member of Oakridge Recreation, Evergreen Sporting Association, Evergreen D.O.C., Music Mother's, P.T.A., Community Betterment Organization, 3rd District Legion Auxiliary, Goldfield Legion Auxiliary Post #370, Assistant leader of Garden Club (Flor-ettes) and the Wright County and Goldfield Historical Societies. Mary Co-Authored along with Dorothy Warner, 36 "Boone River Bridges" Leaflets.

Mary passed away on Sunday, August 20, 2017, at Clarion Wellness and Rehabilitation, at the age of 89 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Mary Nelson; an infant sister, Ruth; brothers and sisters-in-law, Winston Nelson (Virginia), Lewis Nelson (Margaret) and George Nelson, Jr. (Gloria Harvey) and son-in-law, James Johnson. Mary is survived by her husband Kenny Axon of Goldfield; daughters, Sonna Axon Johnson of Goldfield, Suzanne Axon Skadburg (Don) of Clive, Jayne Axon Schipull (Dean) of Goldfield and Julie Axon Burzacott (Jon) of Tiffin; eight grandchildren: Chris Johnson (Sonya) of Goldfield, Erin Jennings (Ed) of Ankeny, Jessica Johnson of Goldfield, Erika Hoversten (Andy) of Andrew, TX, Corey Skadburg (Kiley) of Waukee, Stacy Snow (Jason) of Grimes, Cassie Schipull of Johnston and Joel Burzacott of Iowa City and 17 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, August 23, 2017, at the United Presbyterian Church in Goldfield with Rev. Sara Sutter officiating. Burial in Glenwood Cemetery. Visitation is Tuesday from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at the Foust Funeral Home in Goldfield. Memorials may be left to the discretion of the family.
