June 13, 1918 ---- August 4, 2017

LeVerne Alvestad, 99, Williams

LeVerne Marshall Alvestad of Williams, Iowa, went to be with his Lord on August 4, 2017. LeVerne was born on June 13, 1918, at Jewell, Iowa, the eldest son of Lewis and Mearl (Skilbred) Alvestad. On June 20, 1940, he married Ione Evelyn Skrovig at her parents’ home near Dows. They farmed near Blairsburg for 20 years before moving to the Alvestad family farm in Rose Grove Township in 1960. They had two sons, Gene of rural Williams and Londell “Lonnie” of Texas.

LeVerne was a township A.S.C. committee member, on the Hardin County R.E.C. board, a member of the first school board at Northeast Hamilton School, township trustee, seed dealer, Sunday school teacher and choir member, member of the Board of Deacons, and of the Gideons. He was in a high school quartet, a church quartet, and “Three Sharps and a Flat,” a quartet that opened the broadcast each day on the radio station KJFJ (now KQWC) in Webster City for a period of time in the 1950s.

In the mid 1970s, LeVerne started painting early farming scenes and has artwork in many states (including Hawaii and Alaska) and several foreign countries. Since he enjoyed drawing so much and wanted to share his passion with everyone, he developed a method of drawing with numbers and letters for those children who said they couldn’t draw. LeVerne and Ione traveled to Norway where they enjoyed seeing where their families came from. He lived by the motto, “Do a little each day,” and talked to everyone wherever he was. He loved to eat and take naps on the floor. LeVerne never missed church and often shared his musical talent there.

LeVerne was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Ione; and two brothers, Richard and Sterling. He is survived by sons Gene (Jan) of Williams and Lonnie of Texas; granddaughter Krista (Bill) Wagner and great grandchildren Austin and Macie Wagner of Texas; step grandson Shawn Oberhokamp of Zearing; sisters-in-law Mary Alvestad and Doris Skrovig, and a number of cousins and nieces and nephews.

A celebration of life will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 12, at the Rose Grove Church, 2505 Ubben Avenue, Williams, Iowa. The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorials be given to Gideons, Friends of Rose Grove Church, or LeVerne Alvestad Memorial/Liberty Township Hall Fund (Liberty Center Schoolhouse).
