Darwin L. Kaulen, the son of John and Carrie Hansen Kaulen, was born Nov. 30, 1925 at Missouri Valley. He grew up there and graduated from the Missouri Valley High School. During World War II he served in the U.S. Army. On May 31, 1952, he was united in marriage with Jeanette Donaldson at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. The couple lived in Eagle Grove where he was employed by the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company. The family lived in Eagle Grove for 23 years, and then moved to Webster City for a year, and then to Boone, where they lived seven years. In November, 1983, he retired from Northwestern Bell after 33 years, of employment. The family had lived in Eagle Grove for the past few months, moving here in early 1984. He was a member of the United Methodist Church, the Moose Lodge, and the Pioneers of America of the Northwestern Bell Telephone Company.

He died at the Hamilton County Hospital in Webster City on Wednesday night, Aug. 22, 1984, after an illness of several months with cancer. He attained the age of 58 years, eight months and 22 days. He is survived by his wife, Mrs. Jeanette Kaulen of Eagle Grove, two daughters, Cynthia Kaulen of Webster City and Kari Kaulen of Eagle Grove, a son, Jeffrey Kaulen of Eagle Grove, five sisters and three brothers, Ray Kaulen of Cypress, Calif.; Mrs. W.C. (Lucile) Meyer of Missouri Valley, Mrs. George (Mildred) Gaver of Missouri Valley, E. A. Kaulen of Willits, Calif., Mrs. Marie Christians of Missouri Valley; Mrs. Don (Leona) Cummings of Capistrano Beach, Calif,. Ralph Kaulen of Camarillo, Calif, and Mrs. F.W. (Josephine) Mvers of Missouri Valley. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Dorothy.

Funeral services for Darwin L. Kaulen, 58, of Eagle Grove, were held on Saturday, Aug. 25, 1934 at 1:30 p.m at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove. Rev. Scott C. Hall, church pastor officiated and interment of the ashes was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove.
