Funeral services for Robert Edwin Foust, 88, of Spencer, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday Aug. 1, at Grace United Methodist Church in Spencer. Rev. Paul Frederiksen will officiate the service. A private family interment will occur at Fairview Cemetery in Dows, Iowa, at a later date. Military service will be provided by American Legion Glen Pedersen Post No. 1 and VFW Clay County Post No. 3159.

Robert Edwin Foust passed away at home, with family on July 23, 2017. Robert was born Aug. 28, 1928, on the family farm 4 miles west of Dows to his parents Archie and Nora (Harbert) Foust. He was raised in the Methodist Church. Robert received his diploma from the Dows School District and enlisted at the age of 17 in the United States Navy, where he served as a quarter master from 1945-1949.

Robert married Bonnie Lou (Tillman) Foust on May 18, 1952, at the Little Brown Church in Nashua, Iowa. They enjoyed 65 years of marriage. Together they started their family in Dows. They moved to Sac City in 1964. This is where Robert began his 26-year-long career with the Sernetts Department Store as a manager. In 1974 the family relocated to Spencer, where he continued his career at the new Spencer Sernetts store until his retirement in 1990. Robert was a member and past president of the Golden Kiwanis Club, a member of the Ambassadors Club, and a member of the American Legion. Robert enjoyed friends, dancing, playing cards and shooting pool, but most of all he loved to golf. In addition, he loved wintering at Alamo Palms in Texas for 23 years. There, he would volunteer for the Salvation Army, delivering Christmas gifts/food to the needy. They returned to Spencer full time in 2013.

He is preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, John and Lenard, and two sisters, Helen Mattern and Betty Highly. Left to cherish his memory are his wife Bonnie, his three children, Robin Foust of Spencer, Iowa, Lorrie Shellabarger of Muscatine, Iowa, and Thomas Foust of Farmington, Minnesota; four grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, other relatives, and many friends.
