June 27, 1918 --- July 3, 2004

ROCK ISLAND -- G. Pierson "Pete" Brauch, Lt. Colonel USAR (retired), of Rock Island, died Saturday July 3, 2004, at Trinity Medical Center-West Campus, Rock Island. A celebration of life service will be held 10 a.m. Friday at Broadway Presbyterian Church, Rock Island. Burial, with military honors presented by Moline American Legion Post 246, will be in National Cemetery, Arsenal Island. Visitation will be from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Thursday at Wheelan Funeral Home, Rock Island. Memorials may be made to any of the organizations listed below in which he was a member.

"Pete" was born in Marengo, Iowa, on June 27, 1918, the son of Fredric Gotlieb Brauch and Lucy Merritt Brauch. He graduated from Marengo High School, earned a BSC degree from Iowa University, Iowa City, did graduate study at the University of Minnesota, and received an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters degree from the University of Dubuque. He married Merry Ruth Moore in Wayne, Neb., in 1947. Lt. Col. Brauch was a World War II veteran, serving in the European Theater with Patton's Third Army. He graduated from the Command and General Staff College and served his country for 20 years in the U.S. Army Reserve. His subsequent work as a civilian included Employment as an auditor for the State of Iowa; accountant for Solar Aircraft; assistant Treasurer for Meredith Publishing, Des Moines, IA; secretary-treasurer for Moline Iron, Moline, and secretary-treasurer for Strombeck Manufacturing, Moline. A member of Broadway Presbyterian Church, he served locally as a ruling Elder, active on major committees. He was a moderator for Monmouth Presbytery, and represented his church as a delegate to Great Rivers Presbytery and to the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church, USA. For seven years he was on the general assembly's council on Theological Education. He was a member of the Board of Trustees for the University of Dubuque, and is now an honorary member of that board. Mr. Brauch's community service included membership in the Rock Island Rotary Club, where he was a Paul Harris Fellow, the city of Rock Island Preservation Commission, the American Red Cross Board, the Bethany Home Board, and the Q.C. Council for Churches United. He was listed in the 1969-70 issue of Who's Who in the Midwest. Always interested in the Arts, he was a member of the Davenport Museum Art Guild, the Friends of Art, the board of trustees for the D.M.A., and honorary board member for the newly established Regional Figge Art Museum. He served on the Visiting Artists Board of Directors, and supported memberships in Putnam Museum, the Quad Cities Symphony, the Friends of Chamber Music, the Quad Cities Botanical Center, and the Outing Club.

Survivors include his wife, Ruth; a nephew, John Whiting and his children, Wilson and Katy Whiting, all of Lancaster, Pa.; a niece, Wendy Whiting Blome, her spouse, Richard, and their daughter, Margaret, all of McLean, Va.; and a niece, Jenifer Mercer-Klimowski, her spouse Kevin, and their son, Elliot, all of West Des Moines, Iowa. A sister, Mrs. Edmund "Sally" Whiting, preceded him in death.
