James Robert Johnson, 88, Eagle Grove, IA
James Robert Johnson, the son of Archie W. and Marie (Stultz) Johnson. Jim attended school in Eagle Grove and graduated with the class of 1946. Jim served in the U.S. Navy then returned home to attend Iowa State University to study Electrical Engineering. During his career as an electrical engineer he worked on the start-up of the WOI station and later served as an engineer for the KSTP station in St. Paul, MN. Jim finished his career as a research specialist for 3M Corporation in Minneapolis/St. Paul, helping the company develop different patents in the field of magnetic recording before early retirement. Upon retirement, he enjoyed Ham Radio, WOLYK, as he had his whole life. Jim also had a passion for music, along with nature. Returning to Eagle Grove in late retirement, Jim continued to be a lifelong learner, especially in science related areas. He funded a scholarship for Eagle Grove High School for students to help them pursue careers in science or engineering. Jim passed away on Saturday, April 29, 2017, at the age of 88 years. He will be missed by his friends and neighbors. Graveside services will be held on Monday, May 15, 2017, 2:00 p.m. at Rose Hill Cemetery in Eagle Grove. Foust Funeral Home in charge of arrangements.
