Herman George Eekhoff, 96, of Kanawha, passed away peacefully on Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at the Kanawha Community Home. Funeral services for George Eekhoff will be held at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 20, 2017 at Wright Christian Reformed Church, 1730 East 130rd Street in rural Kanawha, with Pastor Jason Semans officiating. Visitation will be held from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM on Sunday, March 19, 2017, at Ewing Funeral Home, 118 East 2nd Street in Kanawha, and will continue one hour prior to services at the church on Monday.

George, the son of Henry P. and Louisa (Riekens) Eekhoff was born March 1, 1921, on a farm by Wellsburg. George moved with his family by train when he was about 3 years old. He attended country school at Boone #6. He started high school in Renwick and graduated from Kanawha High School with the class of 1939.

George was united in marriage with Helen Schreur on September 27, 1942. The couple made their home in the Kanawha area their entire life. They moved to town in June of 1988 after their “Country Home” burned after being struck by lightning. He was a farmer his entire life retiring at age 91, he raised hogs, cattle and butchered chickens. He worked for many years with Ruter-Christians Tiling, he also owned a hog truck which kept him very busy. He was a jack of all trades, always willing to help in any way.

In his younger years George enjoyed paint by number, playing softball, golf, fishing, and bowling. George usually had a jigsaw puzzle or a woodworking project he was working on. He went from using a cutting torch to a roller cutter for making quilt squares for Helen.

We will miss many things about “Grandpa George”, his laughter, prayers at the dinner table, teasing nature, pink peppermints, card games, dominos and his “Sanford and Son’s” business.

George was a faithful member of Wright CRC, where he served as deacon. George also served on the board at the Kanawha Community Home which he helped build and Norway Rural Telephone Company.

George is survived by five children: Henry (Judy) Eekhoff of Sibley, Iowa, Bob (Ruth) Eekhoff of New Era, Michigan, Lawrence (Donyce) Eekhoff of White, South Dakota, Jean (Don) DeWaard of Pella, Iowa, Jane (Denny “Buck”) Kraft of Pella; 13 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren; 11 great-great grandchildren; brothers and sisters-in-law: Paul and Jen Eekhoff, and Harlan and Delores Eekhoff, Ordie Eekhoff, Viola Eekhoff, Dorothy Eekhoff, Betty Schreur; along with numerous nieces, nephews and friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; wife of 74 years Helen, January 21, 2017, four brothers Peter Boyd, Harold, John, Ray and sister Ada.

In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to: Kanawha Christian School or Wright Christian Reformed Church.
