IONIA, Iowa -- Melvin Archie Kalvig, 93, a resident of Linn Haven Rehabilitation and Healthcare in New Hampton, formerly of rural Ionia, died Sunday, Feb. 5, at Mercy Medical Center, New Hampton.
He was born April 8, 1923, in Belmond, son of Alfred and Milda Dahlstrom Kalvig. On Jan. 25, 1948, he married Hildred Eckenrod at the Republic Community Church. She preceded him in death June 6, 1978. He married Maxine O'Connell on Sept. 25, 1982. He attended school in Waterloo through the eighth grade. Melvin worked at Rath Packing for several years before serving in the U.S. Army. He then worked various jobs, including the Nashua Creamery and the railroad, while farming the Kalvig family farm.
Survived by: his wife of Ionia; two sons, Gary (Carol) and Rex (Katherine), both of Ionia; three daughters, Sandra (Robert) Walton of Maynard, Donna (Rick) Kramer of New Hampton and Rose (James) Vowell of Nashua; 13 grandchildren, five stepgrandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren; a sister, Adala Springmier of New Hampton; a stepson, Bill O'Connell of Frederika; and two stepdaughters, Doris (Will) Hildebrandt of Le Grand and Connie (Charles) Funk of Iowa City. Preceded in death by: his parents; three brothers, Milford, Lester and Leo; and a sister, Gloria Ihnen.
Services: 10:30 a.m. Thursday, Feb. 9, at Republic Community Church, rural Ionia, with burial in Sunnyside Memory Gardens, rural Charles City. Visitation will be from 4 to 7 p.m. today, Feb. 8, at Hugeback-Johnson Funeral Home - Olson Chapel, Nashua. Visitation continues for an hour before services Thursday at the church.
