Arizona Services for Gerald Hill

Memorial services were held Monday, June 18, 1979 in All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church in Sun City, Arizona for Gerald L. Hill, a former Clarion resident. Mr. Hill died Thursday, June 14, 1979 at the age of 73 years in Lewis R. Pyle Memorial Hospital, Payson, Arizona.

Gerald L. Hill, 10030A, Royal Oak Road, Sun City, moved to this address from Aberdeen, South Dakota in 1972. He was born on September 18, 1905, the youngest of nine children, to George J. and Jessie F. Hill, at Clarion, Iowa. He married Essie Mae Thompson, a member of the Cornell College Faculty on December 25, 1930, and they have two sons, Dr. George J. Hill II, Huntington, West Virginia and Thomas D. Hill (Lt. Col AF Ret.)
Pittsford, New York. After graduating from Clarion High School, he attended Cornell College, Mt. Vernon Ia., where he became widely known as a sports writer and was official record keeper of the Midwest Collegiate Conference for many years. After graduating from Cornell in 1927, he remained as director of publicity for one year. He was office and sales manager for the Mt. Vernon office of Iowa Railway and Light Corp. from 1928 to 1931. He began a banking career of over forty years on May 1, 1931 at the Mount Vernon Bank & Trust Co. Later he held offices in banks in Lisbon, Perry, and Sac City, Iowa. In 1950 he became an officer of the Union Savings Bank, Sioux Falls, South Dakota and in 1955 was named executive vice president and managing officer of the new Farmers — Merchants Bank, Aberdeen, South Dakota, he headed the first South Dakota domiciled Multi-Bank Holding Company with banks in Aberdeen, Mobridge, Webster, Clark and Aberdeen, Mobridge, Webster, Clark and Lemmon. He retired as vice chairman of the organization in 1971.

During his banking career, he served on the Smaller Bank Commission of the Bank Administration /Institute, one year as its chairman, and served another term of two Institute. In addition to serving in many civic and community organizations through the years, he was a member of the board of South Dakota Medical Service (Blue Shield) for fourteen years For two years during WWII he served as a Red Cross Field Director with the 97th Infantry Division In 1921 he was a charter member of the Clarion Chapter of DeMolay. He became a Mason in 1927 and received his 50 years certificate in 1977. He was a member of all Masonic Orders, and El Zariba Shrine Temple, Phoenix. He was a life member of the Elks, and was a member of Lions International for many years. He was a member of All Saints of the Desert Episcopal Church in Sun City.

In addition to his wife and two sons, he is survived by six grandchildren, and two sisters, Mrs. Ruby Woodin, Clarion, Iowa, and Mrs. Adelia McBeth, Mason City, Iowa and numerous nephews and nieces. Interment will be in the Rowan Cemetery with the Eyler-Willim Funeral Home in charge of the arrangements.
