October 9, 1956 ----- December 14, 2016

A huge smile came across his face and Roger’s eyes opened wide. He hadn’t smiled in days, nor opened his eyes in hours upon hours, but as he left to see his mama, there was peace in seeing he was ready to go.

Roger Lerdal, 60, passed away on December 14, 2016 at his home in Thornton, IA after fighting a tough battle with lung cancer. Visitation will be held at Retz Funeral Home in Thornton, IA on Saturday, December 17 at 10 a.m. with memorial service to follow at 11 a.m.

Roger was born October 9, 1956 to Kenneth and Shirley (DeLano) Lerdal. He grew up in the Belmond area where he attended high school. He later moved to Thornton where he owned Roger’s Roofing and Construction for many years. Most recently he was employed by LeMar Industries in Sheffield. On December 9, 1987, Roger was united in marriage to his soul-mate, Barb Schumann. Roger loved being a family man; his wife and children were his life. A hard-working man, Roger always found time to help someone in need. He loved watching his kids in sports, and he loved beating family and friends at foosball.

Preceding Roger in death were his parents, his sister and brother-in-law, Linda and Glenn Manasco, and his brother-in-law Ron Schumann. Roger promised to look over his family, and they promised to stay strong for him. Please continue to give love and support to his wife Barb, his sons Josh of Marcus and Jared of Thornton, and daughter Ferris of Mason City; brothers, Mike and Terry (Deb) of Thornton, sisters, Judy Lerdal and Janet (Dan) Cantrell of Forest Hill, Texas; his parents-in-law, Ron and Loretta Schumann, Cherokee, sister-in-law Jeanie (Ray) Murphy, Urbandale, brothers-in-law, Larry (Jenn) Schumann, Madrid, and Bill (Angela) Schumann, Cherokee along with nieces, nephews, family and friends. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family if desired.
