Mildred C. Ahlstrom, 93, of Belmond, IA, died Sunday, Nov. 27, 2016, at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Memorial Mass will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, December 7, 2016, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Belmond.
Mildred C. Nowak, the daughter of Stanley and Victoria Nowak, was born Jan. 19, 1923, in Detroit, Michigan. In her early years she attended Detroit-area schools and then was employed by Packard Motor Co. until enlisting in the Naval Hospital Corps in 1944. Upon getting honorably discharged she married Roy Ahlstrom, who she met in the service. They lived in the Goodell, Iowa, area for a time following their marriage and then moved to Rockford, Illinois, before eventually settling in Cedar Rapids. After moving to Cedar Rapids the couple managed the Armar Ballroom from 1950-1962. Later, Mildred worked the Maurice Breen CPA firm for 17 years.
The couple enjoyed a wonderful retirement playing golf, traveling, visiting with family and Mildred enjoyed working crossword puzzles. She looked forward to shopping excursions and dining out with her family and friends and of course was always up for coffee and conversation. Mildred enjoyed her special poodle “Gi Gi”. She had also done a great deal of house-sitting other people’s pets when they went on trips.
Her Catholic faith and her church homes were very important to her during her entire life journey. Roy and Mildred were gracious supporters of many causes and charities. Two favorites were the Human Society and Camp Courageous.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sister Victoria Pritchard; and her husband Roy; along with many other extended family and friends. Andrews Funeral Home, Belmond, Iowa.
