August 20, 1920 ---- November 10, 2016
Daryl L. Jenison peacefully passed from this earth November 10, 2016. He was surrounded by loved ones, in his comfortable home at Calvin Community.
Daryl was born on August 20th, 1920, to G. Leroy and Grace Wilcox Jenison in Belmond, Iowa. He was one of five brothers and a sister, who all grew up on a homestead family farm, near Belmond. Daryl attended the District 3 country school and graduated from Belmond High School in 1938. That's when his life's adventures began. Daryl began farming and successfully worked his parents land for many years. He then shifted gears and moved to Des Moines, where he worked as a tool and die worker. When the company closed, he purchased a local Dairy Queen franchise. That DQ he later turned into a Des Moines local favorite, known as Beaver Bend. Daryl owned and operated Beaver Bend, with his family, from 1963 to 1986. When he retired, he sold the business to the Graves family, and the business is now known as Snookie's of Beaverdale.
Daryl met his first wife, Marie, at the Surf Ballroom in Clear Lake, and they were married in 1945. They have two children, David (Andy McBeth) and Diann Jenison (Irving). Both Daryl and Marie were actively involved in community service organizations such as Eastern Star and White Shrine. Daryl was also a fifth degree Mason. After Marie passed in 1990, Daryl was lucky to find love once again, met and married Cleo Wichael in 1995, until her death in 2008. Cleo came from a large family, and gave Daryl a wonderful extended family, filled with children, grandchildren, great grandchildren, and great, great grandchildren. Daryl thoroughly enjoyed watching his extended family grow up. Daryl enjoyed traveling, watching golf, reading the newspaper every day and keeping up with local and national events. He loved the Chicago Cubs and was thrilled that they went to the World Series and actually won. He also couldn't resist a good meal and loved fried chicken from Sambetti's.
Daryl may no longer be with us, but he leaves a lasting impression on many of us. He was a kind, patient, humorous, tolerant man, who we should all take a lesson from. In lieu of flowers, and if anyone is interested in making a contribution in Daryl's name, we would suggest the Calvin Community Staff Excellence Fund. Calvin Community and the amazingly kind people who work there, became a second family to Daryl, and we whole heartedly would like to thank them for all of their care. Lastly, we would like to give a shout out to the staff at the local Dairy Queen on Hickman Road. Daryl loved their delicious root beer floats these past few months.
