Arthur Erick was born on October 19, 1932, in Kanawha, Iowa, the son of Ora Andrew and Grace Henrietta (Olthoff) Hanson. He was raised in Britt, where he played basketball and graduated from high school. “Art” was an egg inspector and traveled to numerous hatcheries around the state of Iowa. He met his future wife, Shirley Roelfson, at the Alton Hatchery. They were united in marriage on June 1, 1966, at the parsonage of the Alton Reformed Church.
Art and Shirley owned and operated motels in West Union and Sheldon. After retiring, they moved to Orange City, where they made their home for 40 years. Art always had his eye out for items to buy, fix up, and resell, and he made many friends along the way. He was known for his ready smile, quick wit, and chuckle.
In August of 2014, Art and Shirley moved to the Sanford Senior Care, where they made many new friends. He was also a helper to those who could not help themselves. The staff lovingly referred to him as “The Governor”. Art and Shirley’s family are grateful for the excellent staff at Sanford.
Survivors include his wife of more than 50 years; two daughters, Kathy, and her husband, Johnny Nelson, of Thompson; and Patti Hanson, of Forest City; three grandsons, James Remington, and his wife, Andrea, and their two children Ally and Owen, of Atkins; Randy Sougstad, and his wife, Sarah, and their daughter Evelyn, of Mason City; and William Sougstad, of Thompson; a granddaughter, Emma Sougstad, of Iowa City; and a sister-in-law, Evelyn Oldenkamp, of Orange City. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Erick Hanson; Shirley’s parents, Evert and Anna Kool; and Shirley’s two sisters and their husbands, Joan and Bill Vande Brake and Irene and Harold Bunz.
