Eugene “Gene” Johnson, 83, Rapid City, SD passed away Sunday, October 9, 2016. Gene was born July 12, 1933 in Kanawha, Iowa to Anthony “Tony” and Annie (Hanson) Johnson. After high school, Gene served his country honorably and with pride in the U.S. Army. Gene served with the 7th Infantry Division in Korea. Gene married Carol Stricker on March 26, 1960 in Sioux Falls, SD. Together they farmed and raised cattle in Rock Valley, IA until he retired and they moved to Rapid City in 2003. He loved farming and feeding cattle as well as providing for his family. The farm has been in his family since 1917. He also did cattle hauling for himself and others. Gene spent many mornings going out to Caputa to visit and have coffee.
Gene was a member of Faith Lutheran Church, V.F.W. Life Member, D.A.V. Life Member, Korean War Veterans Life Member, American Legion Life Member, Charter Member of Sioux County Cattle Association, Pennington County Sheriff Volunteer, and VFW Honor Guard in Hudson, IA and Rapid City, SD. Memorials have been established to Faith Lutheran Church and Disabled American Veterans.
Survivors include his wife, Carol Johnson, Rapid City, SD; daughter, Teri (Nathan) Franzmeier, McKinney, TX; sons, Eric (Kim) Johnson, Ashton, IA, Craig Johnson, Rapid City, SD; sisters, Marilyn Trisch, Onalaska, WI, Clarice Nystrup, Akron, IA; and 8 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; granddaughter, Paige Elizabeth Franzmeier; son, Todd Johnson; brother, Don Johnson and his wife, Alice; and brother-in-law, Tom Nystrup.
Visitation will be Thursday, October 13, 2016 from 4:00-6:00pm at Kirk Funeral Home. Funeral services will be Friday, October 14, 2016 at 11:00am at Faith Lutheran Church with Pastor Warren Lahammer officiating. Burial will follow at Black Hills National Cemetery.
