CARS COLLIDE SUNDAY NIGHT SOUTH HARDY

Lane Knutson, 19, Died Wednesday in Ft. Dodge Hospital

Lane Knutson, 19, son of George and Mrs. Carrie Knutson of Hardy, died at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday in the Lutheran hospital in Fort Dodge following critical injuries he suffered in a car collision four miles southeast of Hardy about 7:30 p.m on Sunday evening. The car he was driving collided with one driven by Leo Prussia of Goldfield at a country corner near Owl Lake.

Knutson received a broken vertebrae, a fractured pelvis, and a deep leg cut. He is the son of Mrs. Carrie and George Knutson, both of Hardy. He is also survived by a young brother and sister Jerry and Lila.

The scene of the accident is described as the old creamery corner on old highway No. 10 one mile north of the present primary highway No. 3. Knutson's car was traveling south while Prussia's car was westbound. Lane Knutson was thrown clear by the impact of the crash, while his car rolled over into a ditch. One report says that the Knutson car was hit on the left side near the rear wheel.

William Walkner, son of Mr. and Mrs. Lloyd Walkner of Hardy, riding with Lane Knutson, suffered glass cuts on his arm and a bruised knee. In the Goldfield car, Prussia's mother, who was riding with him, suffered head bruises. Prussia and a third occupant of the car escaped with only slight bruises.

Information was filed with Justice of Peace George Bicknell in Humboldt against Leo Prussia, September 10, charging him with negligence in failure to come to a complete stop at a stop sign. Prussia paid a $25 fine, although he said that he had slowed down for the corner. He charged that the other car failed to have its lights on at that hour of the evening.

Knutson's car was badly damaged while Prussia's car was not damaged so extensively. Both Knutson and Walkner were taken immediately to a Renwick physician. The Renwick doctor accompanied Knutson to the Fort Dodge hospital.

Lane Knutson received his discharge from the Navy, July 16 with a rating of SKD3c. He was inducted into the service June 8, 1944 at Great Lakes, later serving at Bremerton, Wash., and San Diego, Calif. He planned to attend the Eagle Grove junior college this fall.
