SAN PABLO, CA — A memorial service will be held Sept. 16 for Robert Noel “Bob” Lineaweaver, a former San Pablo mayor who died Sept. 5 at the age of 88. The service will begin at 11 a.m. at Wilson and Kratzer Mission Bells Chapel, 13644 San Pablo Ave., San Pablo.
Bob Lineaweaver was born on Christmas Day 1927 in Goodell, Iowa, to Harvey and Helen Lineaweaver, according to a brief biography provided by his family. When he was 12, the family moved to Oakland. He joined the merchant marine as a 16-year-old, and served aboard the S.S. Afoundria attack transport ship during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945, when he was 17. He eventually enlisted in the U.S. Army, and became a member of the elite 11th Airborne Division, according to the biography.
Lineaweaver met his future wife, the former Iva Nell Parrish, at Rollerland, a now defunct roller skating rink in Oakland. The couple eventually moved to Richmond, then to San Pablo. At the time of Lineaweaver’s death, they were living in Hercules. Lineaweaver was a boilermaker and welder for 35 years at the former Standard Oil Co., now Chevron, refinery in Richmond, retiring in 1986.
He served on the San Pablo City Council for three terms, from 1964 to 1976, including two one-year terms as mayor. Earlier, he served three years on the city’s Planning Commission.
“He was a great man that served his country, community and family with all his being,” Lineaweaver’s son Dale said. “He was truly loved by all and will be missed.” Lineaweaver was an early advocate of BART and was aboard the system’s first public ride in 1972. “He was very proud to help bring rapid transit to Contra Costa County,” his son said.
Bob Lineaweaver was a member of the San Pablo Eagles Lodge and Moose Lodge No. 550. He was an elder of the Barrett Avenue Christian Church in Richmond, and a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Iva Lineaweaver of Hercules; sons Terry Lineaweaver of Modesto, Dale Lineaweaver of El Sobrante, and David Lineaweaver of Helena, Montana, and their families; 11 grandchildren, including granddaughters Michelle Lineaweaver of Pinole and Heather Lineaweaver-Brisbo of Richmond; and 16 great-grandchildren, including Mikayla Hunt and Aimee Hunt of Pinole.

September 13, 2016***************
My brother Bob was born on Christmas Day, 1928. Our mother gave him his middle name Noel because of his birth on this special occasion. Bob was the second oldest of three brothers. Our first brother was Kenneth, who passed on in 1995. Seven years later Bob was born, and seven years after that a third son was born, Gaylord.
Our father, Harvey Edward Linaweaver, was an Iowa farm boy until he enlisted in the Navy during WW1 and was shipped overseas and served aboard an airship stationed in England. It was there that he met our mother, Helen (Nell) Heathershaw, who soon after became Mrs. Linaweaver.
All three of us brothers were born in Iowa, and we lived the farm life until 1939, when Dad moved us all to Oakland, CA. Bob developed many interests in this new environment and at one time was a lifeguard, was very active in roller skating, and took boxing lessons. On one occasion, I became the designated punching bag.
Bob was always looking for something new to do. When he was still in his teens during WWII, much to my mother’s dismay he joined the Merchant Marines and promptly went to sea. Not long after that adventure he joined the Army and became a paratrooper in Japan. After the war, Bob worked on construction projects with Dad, and worked for many years at the Standard Oil Refinery in Richmond, Ca.
In 1949 Bob met and married Iva Nell Parrish. They raised three sons, Terry, Dale and David. At one time, Bob was elected Mayor of San Pablo, Ca. After their sons grew up and married, Bob and Iva Nell made many trips in their travel trailer or their motor home, crossing the country visiting friends and relatives. Later on they invested in tractor-trailers, and began hauling freight.
Eventually, Bob and Iva Nell settled down a bit when they became camp ground hosts at several camp sites in California. Bob enjoyed meeting new people and old friends alike, so this became his perfect retirement life.
I wish you well on your new journey my brother, we will meet again.
