September 17, 1886 ---- October 5, 1948

This entire community was shocked and saddened to learn of the sudden death of J. F. Courtney, Tuesday morning. He passed away at 4:30 o'clock at St. Mary's hospital at Rochester, Minn. He was 62 years of age. Mr. Courtney had gone to the Rockwell hospital for a check-up, but was around here for a short time last Friday before returning to the hospital. His condition was declared serious Monday and he was taken to Rochester where he died soon afterwards. He had been Thornton postmaster during the past eight years. Funeral services were held this Thursday morning at 9:30a.m. at the Sacred Heart church at Rockwell with burial in the Sacred Heart cemetery.

He is survived by two daughters Mrs. Mary Hedrick of Boulder, Colo., Mrs. Loretta Erb of Knoxville, Iowa, and one grandchild; also one brother, Walter at Algona, Ia.; and one sister, Carrie, at Belmond. His wife preceded him in death February 15, 1945.
