June 21, 1933 --- September 2, 2016

Doris Elaine Nelson, was born On June 21st, 1933, in Goldfield, Iowa, to Glenn and Edna (Hansen) Nelson. She graduated valedictorian in 1950 from Bradgate High school, Bradgate, Iowa. She was joined in Holy Matrimony to Dean Gerald Hoag Sr. on March 1st, 1953 at Trinity Lutheran Church in rural Rutland, Iowa. Through her graduation from Iowa Methodist Nursing School in 1953, 5 children, and several residences, she and Dean went on to celebrate 63 years of wedded bliss. In 1964 the family moved to a working farm outside of Knierim, Iowa where Doris continued to work at Mercy Hospital in Ft Dodge, Iowa before settling into the Manson School Nurse position. There she worked for many years, not only as an RN, but instructing in a variety of health programs and tirelessly certifying staff and students in CPR. Throughout that time she was busy raising her children, supporting them in their many activities, caring for her home, garden, field, miscellaneous farm animal/pet ‘health issues’, was a beautiful seamstress and... a very faithful part of her church community.

In 2004, Doris and Dean moved from the farm into Manson, Iowa and this past March, 2016, they subsequently made the move to Prairie Vista Village in Altoona, Iowa to be closer to family. Doris’ greatest joy was her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She loved their visits and looked forward to hosting them in her home for the holidays (making chicken salad from scratch for them and gifting each and everyone with a jar of rhubarb jam). Throughout her life Doris remained active, bright, loving and fun.
