August. 29, 1853 --- June 30, 1925

John P. Burke was born Aug. 29, 1853, near Stavanger, Norway. He came to America in the spring of 1872 and settled in LaSalle county, Illinois. In 1891 he was married to Miss Ingeborg Birkeland. The following spring they moved to Palo Alto county, Iowa, where they lived on their farm till in 1913, when they moved to Eagle Grove. They were then quite alone, the son, Pete, having died at the age of 21 and the daughter, Anna, died 18 years old, but the living hope of the Christian gave them peace of mind and heart, and they enjoyed a well earned rest among many friends those years. Mr. Burke was under doctors' care about a month. He died at a hospital In Des Moines, Tuesday, June 30, and was buried from the West Side Lutheran church July 2. Interment was in Rose Hill cemetery. A host of friends and neighbors were there to cast a last look at the form of the departed and to speak a word of sympathy and comfort to the bereaved wife.
