OVERACKER — In Clarion, Iowa. Dec. 30th, 1886.
Simeon Overacker, aged 68 years, 11 months and 23 days. From a memoranda made by Mr. Overacker just prior to his last sickness we learn that he was born in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, Jan. 7th 1818, and twelve years later he moved with his parents to Michigan, where he resided until the spring of 1857, when he moved to Iowa, locating at Belmond, in this county. He was married to Miss Caroline Paddock at Waterloo, Michigan, October 19th, 1841. He enlisted in the 32d Iowa Infantry Aug. 14, 1862, and was discharged on the 25th of the following July on account of having contracted disease that rendered him unfit for service, and most of the time since he has been a resident of this county. For a number of years he had been in poor health the greater portion of the time, being afflicted with a cancer in the throat and also a disease of the lungs. As a citizen and neighbor Mr. Overacker was above reproach; that he had failings cannot be denied, but in this respect he was no worse off than his neighbors, therefore let us all bear in mind the good qualities of the departed and forget the errors common to the living. In charge of the G.A.R Post the remains were taken to Belmond on Friday and buried in the cemetery beside those of a son who died some years since. Another old settler and soldier gone to that bourne from whence no traveler returns. Peace to his ashes.
