HAMPTON — Lorel E. Winfrey, 67, of Hampton, Iowa, passed away April 19, 2007, at the Franklin General Hospital in Hampton, Iowa. Funeral service will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Hampton with burial in the Wayside Cemetery in Chapin, Iowa. The Rev. John Byrne will officiate the service. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at the Sietsema-Vogel Funeral Home in Hampton.

He was born Nov. 5, 1939, in Bonaparte, Iowa, to Levi E. and Mable (Flaharty) Winfrey. Lorel graduated from the Wapello High School in 1957. He owned the DX gas station in Chapin, Iowa. Lorel was a police officer for both Hampton then Sheffield, Iowa. Later he became a lineman for IPS/Mid American Energy. He retired from Mid American Energy in Hampton in 2001. After he retired he worked for Heitland Excavation in the summertime and then headed south for the winter. He and his wife enjoyed warm winter months in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Lorel was a member of the Hampton Lions Club, serving as president from 1992 to 1993 and was awarded the Jones Fellow Award. He was a member of the Sheffield Jaycees and International Electrical Brotherhood Union as safety director. Lorel enjoyed working in his woodshop, golfing, surfing the Internet, attending the Annual Old Threshers Reunion and going south for the winter months.

He is survived by wife of 22 years, Judy Winfrey, of Hampton; son, Loren and his wife, Laurie Winfrey, of Ames, daughter, Pamela, and husband, Tracy Peters, of Hutchinson, Kan., son, Brian and wife, Shelly Winfrey, of Hampton; stepdaughter, Christie Helmer, of Mason City; stepson, Lynn Helmer of Petersburg, Alaska; sister, Nancy, and husband, Richard Stanley, of Pine Island, Minn.; brother, Kendall, and wife, Annabel Winfrey, of Livingston, Mont.; brother, Burton, and wife, Pauline Winfrey, of Houston, Texas; grandchildren, Lucas, Tanner, Trevor, Colton, Jace, Jessica, Samantha, Kyle, Zachary, Spencer, Brianna, Frank, Steve, Jake, Jessica, Emily, Abby, Samantha, Renee, Ryan; great-grandchildren Madison, Anthony, Alexander and Tommy Jr.; and his special family members, Jeanette and Bubba Hemmes, Roger and Kim Hemann. Lorel was preceded in death by his parents. Sietsema Vogel Funeral Home.
