Gary V. Baack, 76, St. Joseph, [Missouri] passed away Monday, August 22, 2016, at Mosaic Hospital, surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born on January 27, 1940, in Klemme, Iowa, to the late Howard and Alida (Schubert) Baack. He was a graduate of Plymouth High School, Plymouth, Iowa, and North Iowa Area Community College, Mason City, Iowa. Gary served his country in the Army Reserves.
Gary married Joan Doering on April 4, 1964, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, in Mason City. They celebrated 52 years of marriage and together raised their six children. Gary served a 45 year career in hog procurement, beginning with Armour & Company in Iowa, South Dakota, Minnesota and Missouri, and ending with Cargill Company, in Wichita, Kansas. After his retirement, he returned to St. Joseph and worked as a consultant for Boehringer Ingelheim.
Gary was a member of Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church and former member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church. He was also a member of the Knights of Columbus Council 571 and the Legends at Fairview Golf Course. Gary enjoyed fishing, golfing, crossword puzzles and most especially, his beloved grandkids. He was also an avid sports fan, especially of the Iowa Hawkeyes, Wichita State Shockers, Kansas City Chiefs and Royals.
Gary is survived by: his wife, Joan, of the home; children, Stephen Baack (Cindy), Maryville, Illinois, James Baack (Cathy), St. Joseph, Anne Irizarry, St. Joseph, Paul Baack (Amy), Kansas City, Missouri, John Baack, St. Joseph, and Mary Garvey (John), St. Joseph; six grandchildren, Tyler Irizarry (Tarah), Kaela, Mitchell and Katie Baack, Emma and Sarah Garvey; two great-granddaughters, Hynlee and Haven Irizarry; siblings, Harlan Baack (Marge), Mason City, Janie Hoffman (George), Surprise, Arizona, Howard Baack Jr., Dubuque, Iowa, Marilyn Smith (Bernie), Mission Viejo, California, Dennis Baack, Greeley, Colorado, and Lonnie Baack (Pat), Annandale, Minnesota. Gary was preceded in death by two sister-in-laws, Janis Baack and Cynde Baack.
Mass of Christian Burial: 10 a.m. Saturday, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment: Mt. Olivet Cemetery. Visitation will be held 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Friday, at Heaton-Bowman-Smith and Sidenfaden Chapel. Visitation will resume from 5-8 p.m. Friday, at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, where a Rosary will be held at 6 p.m. The family has requested memorial donations to Bishop LeBlond High School, Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church, St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Haydens Hope or donors choice.
