Camarillo, CA ---- Glenn H. Sanders passed away peacefully at his Camarillo home on August 11, 2016 with his family by his side. He was born in Renwick, Iowa on August 4, 1929. Glenn was the youngest of three children. He moved to California in 1942 and graduated from Redondo Beach High School in 1946. Glenn entered the Army Air Force, where he worked as a radar technician and supported the Berlin Airlift. In 1951, he married Sue Ann Delbridge of Redondo Beach and they welcomed their first child, Gayle, in 1953. He earned the rank of technical sergeant and was discharged from the Air Force in 1954. In 1955, they welcomed their son, Gregg.
Glenn was an electronics salesman for Statham Instruments based in Santa Monica and transferred to the Oxnard plant in 1963. The Sanders family lived in Camarillo before moving to Puerto Rico for Glenn's job in 1967, where they enjoyed new hobbies such as surfing, learning Spanish, and traveling in the Caribbean. The family moved back to Camarillo in 1969, and Glenn's enthusiasm for wine led him to purchase two liquor stores: Best Buy Wine & Spirits in Camarillo and Allan's Liquor in Port Hueneme. The stores became popular spots to purchase winning California lottery tickets in the 1980s and 1990s. In 2001, Glenn was named Camarillo Small Business Person of the Year.
Glenn owned both stores until his retirement in 2005. Even though he was a very hard worker, he still made time for his love of travel with his wife. He visited six of the seven continents, and he and Sue Ann traveled all over Europe together. Glenn was a member of Rotary International, and he helped found what is now the Taste of Camarillo Wine, Brew & Food Festival, a charity event that initially benefitted the Boys and Girls Club of Camarillo. Glenn was passionate about gardening, becoming a Master Gardener with UC Davis' Hansen Agricultural Research and Extension Center in Santa Paula. He also enjoyed fishing, walking, genealogy, and spending time with his family.
He is survived by his loving wife of almost 65 years, Sue Ann Sanders, his daughter Gayle Sanders Knize (Mark), son Gregg Sanders (Kim), five granddaughters, and one great grandson.
Thank you to Glenn's wonderful caregivers, Priscilla, Maria, Silvia, and Diana. He will be remembered for his strong work ethic, generosity, desire to learn new things, and love of wine. Glenn will be interred at Riverside National Cemetery in a private service with military honors. Conejo Mountain Funeral Home -- Camarillo, CA
