Dr. Carolyn Faunce Copeland, age 74, died on Monday, October 4, 2004, in Akron, Ohio, after a brief illness. Ms. Copeland was a retired professor of English at the University of Iowa and former resident of Coralville, Iowa. Born in Bridgeport, she was the daughter of James Copeland and Florence Palmer Copeland. She was raised in the Walnut Beach section of Milford, and was a 1948 graduate of Milford High School. Ms. Copeland served in Special Entertainment Operations for the U.S. Air Force from 1949 to 1952, writing, acting and directing plays and musicals that toured Air Force Bases. After discharge, she obtained a BA in Journalism from the University of California at Berkeley in 1956 and an MS in Education from Southern Connecticut State College in 1958. Prior to pursuing studies at Iowa, she worked as a teacher in Iran for the Children of American oil workers and in Chile for the children of employees of the Anaconda Copper Corporation. In 1975, Ms. Copeland earned a Ph.D. from the University of Iowa. After completion of her Doctorate in English, she was appointed professor of English at the University of Iowa. Ms. Copeland completed her career at the University as one of the key professors involved with the Iowa Writing Project. She was the author of two works in her field: "Language and Time Gertrude Stein", a definitive analysis of the style of experimental writer Gertrude Stein and "The Last Colonial", a novel focusing on Iranian-American relations just before the overthrow of the Shah of Iran. Through her teaching and personal life Dr. Carolyn Copeland touched the lives of many. Those that had the privilege of knowing her will sorely miss her intellect, compassion and delightful sense of humor.

Carolyn was predeceased by a sister, Sheila Stella; and a dear friend, Cleo Martin. She is survived by sisters, Virginia Gordoni, Constance Stevenson of New Jersey; and brothers, James Copeland of East Haven, and Norman Copeland of Milford. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. Memorial services and burial will take place in Eagle Grove, Iowa.
