Clifford L. Vannatta, 92, of Sioux City passed away Sunday evening, Aug. 14, 2016, at Cherokee Specialty Care in Cherokee, Iowa. Services will be 2 p.m. Thursday at First Church of Christ in Cherokee. The Rev. Tom Lewis will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Hill Cemetery. There will be a family prayer service at 1:45 p.m. Thursday at the church. Visitation will be 2 to 7 p.m. today, with the family present 5 to 7 p.m., at Boothby Funeral Home in Cherokee.
Clifford was born on June 28, 1924, in Cherokee, to Pearl and Myrtle (Gleason) Vannatta. He graduated from Cherokee Wilson High School in 1942. He was married to Marion Bugh on May 26, 1950, in Cherokee. He had worked for the Illinois Central Railroad for 25 years, Williams TV and KSCJ Radio Station in Sioux City, drove gas transport for Saunders Oil, drove truck for Sioux Transportation, and Yellow Freight, retiring in 1986. He had been a resident of Sioux City the past 60 years and prior to this had lived in Eagle Grove, Iowa, for a short time and was originally from Cherokee.
Clifford was a member of Crescent Park United Methodist Church in Sioux City. He also belonged to a Ham Radio Operators Club and MARS (Military Affiliated Radio Systems). He liked to tinker with electrical and mechanical components. He could fix almost anything and he loved to roller skate.
He is survived by his four children, Teresa (Greg) Herbold of Pierson, Iowa, Mike Vannatta of Council Bluffs, Iowa, Paula (Martin) Appelt of Sioux City, and Sharon (Lynn) Norman of Breda, Iowa; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Darlene Patten of Cherokee, and Beverly (Harold) Heschke of Cherokee; five sisters-in-law, Dolores Vannatta of Cherokee, Delores Vannatta of Le Mars, Iowa, Linda Vannatta of Cherokee, Marge Tedemanson of Antioch, Ill., and Marguerite Lovell of Antioch; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marion in 1988; three brothers, LuVerne, Robert, and Darrel Vannatta; brothers-in-law, Kenneth Patten, Jim Bugh, Kenneth Bugh, Cecil Lovell and Buster Jenness; and sisters-in-law, Dorothy Jenness and Alice Bevins.
