Adrian Ploegstra, 84, of Elkhart, slipped peacefully from this life on August 17, 2016. Adrian was born March 19, 1932 to Minnie and Agnes (DeWaard) Ploegstra near Kanawha, Iowa. He served in the U.S. Army from 1952 to 1954. After his discharge from the service, he attended Waldorf Jr. College where he met Shirley Sande. Shirley and Adrian were married December 26, 1964 at Salem Lutheran Church in Roland. After graduating from Luther College in 1960, Adrian went to work for Farm Bureau Insurance and was there until his retirement in 1992. His main hobby was farming his 340 acres and working on his tractors and equipment. Adrian also loved to travel, visiting all 50 states and every continent except for Antarctica. He loved reading, being with his family, getting hugs from granddaughters, and making connections with people about their travels in common.

Adrian was a member of Trinity Christian Reformed Church in Ames, the Webster City Lions Club, and Bondurant American Legion Post #396.

Adrian is survived by his wife, Shirley Ploegstra of Elkhart; his children, Paula (Jason) Blair of Blaine, Minn., Mark Ploegstra of Ames and Carl Ploegstra of Ankeny; his grandchildren, Breonna Blair and Jordan Blair; and his sister, Lois Conrad of Kanawha. He was preceded in death by his parents.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the charity of your choice. The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. Sunday, August 21 at Adams Funeral Home, 502 Douglas Ave., Ames, IA. Funeral services will be at 11:00 a.m. Monday, August 22 at Trinity Christian Reformed Church, 3626 Ontario St., Ames, IA. Graveside services will follow at 2:00 p.m. at Lincoln Township Cemetery southwest of Alleman. Adams Funeral Home in Ames is assisting the family with arrangements.
