Memorial services for Ruth Ann Matre will be held at 7:30 p.m. Thursday, April 3, 1997, at the First United Methodist Church in Shenandoah, Iowa. A memorial is being established in her name. Ruth Ann Matre, 49, of Shenandoah, Iowa, passed away on Monday, March 31, 1997, at her residence in Shenandoah after a long illness with cancer.Ruth Ann Matre was born on March 24, 1948, in Iowa City, Iowa, the daughter of Robert and Florence Riggs. She was raised in Seoul, South Korea where her parents were missionaries, and graduated from the Seoul Korea Foreign School. She then attended college at Iowa State University in Ames and graduated in 1970 with a degree in journalism and mass communication. She married Jim Matre on May 24, 1969, in Estherville, Iowa. She and Jim lived many different places as their careers progressed. Ruth Ann worked for the Waterloo Courier in Waterloo, Iowa, she taught school, journalism and yearbook, at Renwick, Iowa, (1 year), Vinton-Shellsburg (4 years), Prairie City (1 year), Lynnville-Sully (4 years). They lived in Red Oak, Iowa, from 1981-1988 during which time she taught in the Atlantic School District for 6 years and after moving to Shenandoah, Iowa, she taught at Nishna Valley Schools in Emerson and at Iowa Western Community College in Clarinda, Iowa. She completed the K thru 12 Talented and Gifted Studies at the University of Northern Iowa in 1995. Ruth Ann was an avid golfer and from 1972 to 1976, she and Jim owned and operated a golf course in Oelwein, Iowa.
She is survived by her husband, Jim Matre, who is superintendent of the Shenandoah Iowa School District, her son, Jay and his fiancée, Lisa Meyer, students at Iowa State University in Ames, her parents, Robert and Florence Riggs of Clear Lake, Iowa, brother, Brian Riggs of Point of Rocks, Maryland, and sister Gail Meyer of Clear Lake, Iowa. She was preceded in death by a brother, Eric, in 1986.
