Ivan W. Maurer of Chapel Hill, N.C., passed away on September 17, 2011, at the age of 91. He was born in Renwick, Iowa, in 1920, to Samuel and Leona Maurer. After graduating from Iowa State Teachers College in 1941, he taught high school for two years before joining the Navy during World War II. While in the Navy, he worked as an educational specialist in electronic maintenance in Corpus, Christi, Texas, and Memphis, Tenn. In 1956, he moved with his family to Decatur and worked for the Army's Missile and Rocket Agency until his retirement in 1971. He was an avid genealogist and traveled extensively pursuing his hobby. He is remembered as a gentle and loving father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife, Grace Clancy Maurer; daughter, Jan Touma (Joe) of Durham, N.C; sons, Mike Maurer (Lecia) of Decatur and Steve Maurer (Brenda) of Montgomery; five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren.
