KLEMME — Shirley Jean Netland, age 86, of Klemme, IA, died Wednesday, July 13, 2016, at Mercy Medical Center-North Iowa, Mason City, IA, with her loving family at her side. Funeral services will be held 10:30 a.m. Monday, July 18, 2016, at Immanuel Reformed United Church of Christ-Klemme. The Rev. Donna Buckman will be officiating. Burial will be in the Ell Township Cemetery, Klemme. Visitation will be Sunday from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Andrews Funeral Home, Klemme, and continues one hour prior to the services at church Monday. Memorials are suggested to Shirley’s family or to the local chapter for Cancer Research of the American Cancer Society, or the donor’s choice.

Shirley Jean Rapp was born Sept. 21, 1929, the daughter of John and Karen Augusta (Lind) Rapp, on her parent’s farm in rural Hancock County, Iowa. She was baptized in her childhood. Shirley attended rural Hancock County Schools. She was united in marriage to George Andrew Netland on Aug. 15, 1945, at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, Garner, IA. The couple’s union was blessed with 8 children.

In addition to being a lifelong home maker, Shirley was employed most of her life in various jobs in the baking and restaurant profession, where her culinary and baking skills were second to none.

Shirley was very devoted to providing for the needs of her husband and children. She was very much a hardworking and energetic lady who focused her ambitions on nurturing to her family. She would do almost anything for anyone and often put others’ wants and needs before those of her own. In earlier years of their marriage, Shirley and George looked forward to going out on dancing excursions. George preceded her in death on Jan. 7, 1979.

Throughout her life Shirley was employed in various places, all of which related to her cooking and baking skills. She had been a clerk at the Garner Bakery, cook at Hull’s Café in Garner, Pie Maker at Clear Lake Bakery, cook at the elementary school during her years living in San Antonio, Texas, after George had passed away, a nurse’s aide at the Concord Care Center in Garner, and had cooked at the Prairie View Senior Apartments in Garner, retiring after her 80th birthday.

Shirley was a past member of the Klemme United Methodist Church and in more recent times belonged to the Immanuel Reformed UCC Church-Klemme. She was also a lifetime member of the Garner American Legion Auxiliary and VFW.

She will be remembered by her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren in many different ways including of course her delicious homemade bread and buns. Her large made-from-scratch batches of peanut butter cookies which she would often have to hide from them or they would be gone in an instant. Others will recall her delectable bean soup and following it up with her wonderful biscuits and her other special homemade treats such as fried bread dough with powdered sugar.

Still others will reflect fondly on the life skills she taught them such as maintaining a meticulous clean and organized home, weed-free lawn and beautiful flower gardens. Shirley had numerous pastimes including tooling about on her bicycle, a good visit with her family and friends, a day out on the town followed up with a meal at Bonanza or other restaurants, a trip to the casino, and working bingo. She had done some traveling to visit her son in Arizona and other places and a favorite destination was Las Vegas.

Shirley loved to spend leisure times watching old Westerns and John Wayne in particular, “The Waltons,” “Everybody Loves Raymond,” “Little House on the Prairie,” “Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman,” and of course her favorite soap “Bold and the Beautiful.” Over the last few years as her health and vision declined she truly just loved spending time with her family and grandkids and great-grandkids.

Her memory will continue in the hearts and minds of her children: Willard (Diane) Netland, Klemme, IA, Mary (Cecil) Noble, Thornton, IA, Merlin Netland, Klemme, IA, Marilyn Roberts, Garner, IA, and Carolyn Rasmuson, Newalla, OK; a daughter-in-law, Eileen Netland, Klemme; and numerous grand and great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband George; daughters Karen Lay, and Wanda Irene Netland; son Benjamin Lars Netland; infant son George Andrew; granddaughter Tara Roberts; and sons-in-law Duane Roberts and Gayle Lay.
