Patricia Marie Thompson was born to Edwin and Deloris (Dempsey) Chapman in Belmond, Iowa on October 2, 1928. During her school years at Belmond she played alto sax and one of her proudest accomplishments was playing in the Mason City Band Festival and marching in a parade in Minneapolis when she was in 5th grade. As a high schooler, Pat enjoyed singing in groups and as a soloist. Her saxophone career continued into her college years at Iowa State Teachers College where she received her 2 year teaching degree. She then returned to complete her four year degree at the University of Northern Iowa.
Patricia was united in marriage to Marvin Thompson on May 25, 1953, in Fort Smith, Arkansas. To this union two daughters, Julie and Lynn, were born. Pat spent her first two years teaching kindergarten in Lake Mills, Iowa. For the next 44 years, until her retirement, Pat taught third grade at Washington Elementary in Charles City. During her years as a teacher, Pat was a member of both the Iowa State Education Association and the National Education Association. Her memberships in Charles City included Saint John Evangelical Lutheran Church, the American Legion Auxiliary, and the Red Hat Society. She was also a member of Alpha Delta Kappa Phi chapter, and a former member of the Patchwork Pals Quilt Guild. Pat loved spending time working in her vegetable and flower gardens, catching up with friends over coffee, singing, quilting and sewing (especially baby blankets for her friend's children and grandchildren), and being with her grandkids. She was very proud of her children's and grandchildren's accomplishments.
Living family members include Pat's husband Marvin; her children: Julie (Gary) DeBower of Charles City and Lynn (James) Hicks of Waukesha, Wisconsin; her grandchildren: Danielle DeBower of Charles City; Justin DeBower of Fort Dodge; James M. Hicks of Bloomington, Indiana; and Mathew Hicks of Iowa City; her sister Frances Frigo of DePere, Wisconsin; her nieces, nephews and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents and stillborn son James Duane Thompson in 1957.
