WATERLOO — Marjorie Marie Paulsen, 93, died Saturday, July 2. She was born Dec. 13, 1922, in Eagle Grove , daughter of Orrin Bennet Severson and Mary Schapp Severson. She married Roger Sewell in 1940, and they later divorced. She married Daniel Dale Paulsen in 1947, and they later divorced.
Marjorie graduated in 1940 as valedictorian at Randalia Consolidated School. She worked at Black's Department Store for 10 years and in 1973 graduated as a certified substance abuse counselor from MHI, Independence. She worked in the Cedar Rapids Alcoholism program as director of the Marty Mann House for Women and then was a counselor for the Schoitz Hospital Substance Abuse program in Waterloo from 1976 until retiring in 1985.
She had been active in the PTA, was district chairman for Conestoga Girl Scouts and was a deacon at First Presbyterian Church, where she was a member.
Survived by: two sons, Samuel (Bunny) Sewell of Naples, Fla., and Daniel Paulsen of Waterloo; two daughters, Cassandra Taylor of Waterloo and Krystyna Miltenberger of Waverly; nine grandchildren, Adam, Christopher, Jenny, Jason, Becky, Emlynn, Sarah, Shawn and Rachel; eight step grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren. Preceded in death by: her parents; a son, Patrick Micheal Paulsen; a son-in-law, John Miltenberger; a great-grandson, Christopher T. Buhmann; four brothers, Phillip, Bennet, Daniel and George; a sister, Doris; and her dog, Brodie.
Memorial service: 10 a.m. Friday, July 8, at First Presbyterian Church, Waterloo, with visitation for an hour before services in Calvin Hall. Memorials: may be directed to the family.
Marjorie continued to serve the community as a mentor to children in the Waterloo Schools. She had a passion for lifetime learning and creativity.
