Maxine McVey Whitty, age 80, of Belmond, died at sunrise as the birds were singing, on Saturday, July 2, 2016 at the Rehabilitation Center of Belmond. Funeral Mass for Maxine will be celebrated at 10:00 A.M. Monday July 11, 2016 at St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Rite of Committal will take place in the St Francis Cemetery near Belmond. Visitation for Maxine Whitty will be from 2:00 – 4:00 P.M. Sunday July 10, 2016 at the St Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Belmond. Vigil for the Deceased will begin at 5:00 P.M. Sunday. Funeral arrangements are under the direction of Dugger Funeral Home, 111 Luick’s Lane South in Belmond. In lieu of flowers, the family wishes memorials be made in Maxine’s name to the Donor’s choice.

Maxine Joy, daughter of Fredrick and Henrietta Gartz, was born July 31, 1935 in Belmond, Iowa. Maxine attended and graduated from Belmond High School in 1973, returning full time to classes after rearing her children. On July 10, 1952, Maxine was united in marriage to James L. McVey. The couple was blessed with five children: James, Brian, Denise, Stacy, and Michael.

Maxine shared her God-given gift of music as a pianist, organist and cantor. She was an avid bicycle rider and was an active member of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Parish.

Maxine is survived by her five children: James McVey, Brian (Bobbi) McVey, Denise (James) Scheller, Stacy (Bobbie Hoch) McVey and Michael McVey; four grandchildren: Nathan, Jacob, Adam and Kaylie; four great-grandchildren: Taylor, Tristan, Vanessa and Mia; one sister, Leota; fourteen nieces and nephews: Leroy, Sandy, Arlyn Dean, Denny, David, Karen, Max, Steve, Lisa, Leslie, Johnny, Gayle, Annette and Randy; and two sisters-in-law: Dolly and Bennie. She is preceded in death by her parents, James L. McVey, and five siblings: Leo, Muriel, Dorothy, Bill, and Gary.

Maxine was buried in a handmade Trappist casket from the monks of New Melleray Abbey in Peosta, IA.
