Oscar Sherman Bangs, son of Norman and Sylvia Bangs, was born January 19, 1877, at Kahoka, Missouri, and died at Eagle Grove, Iowa, October 13, 1920. When he was about one year old his parents removed to Plainfield, Illinois, shortly thereafter to Humboldt, Iowa, which was the family, home until October, 1889, when they came to Eagle Grove, which place has since been their home. Oscar attended the public schools, graduating from high school in 1894.

From boyhood days he was deeply interested in mechanics and following his graduation entered the services of the Eagle Grove Electric Co., who were then installing their first plant. He followed the construction work with great interest, eventually becoming engineer at the plant. In 1898 or 1899 he entered the employ of the C. & N. W. railway at Mason City, Iowa on the line then building between Fox Lake, Minn., and Belle Plaine, Iowa, remaining until the completion of the line, when he returned to Eagle Grove and entered the service of the same company as fireman, eventually winning promotion as an engineer, which he has since filled.

Oscar was the second of seven children, an elder sister, Clara, having passed on in 1882. Surviving him are his parents, his sisters, Mrs. Florence Friese of New Orleans, La., Mrs. Ella Marie Dunbar and Mrs. Louise Thompson, both of Albuquerque, New Mexico, and his brothers, Ted of Clarion, and Donald of Fort Dodge. Oscar loved his home and family, and his life has been a noble example, of loving care and thoughtfulness for them, his wise forethought having provided for their material comfort after his going.
