Kenneth Roscoe Porter, the son of Walter and Lula Hollingsworth Porter, was born at Martinsburg on Feb. 26, 1922. He grew up in the Martinsburg and Hedrick area. He graduated from the Hedrick High School. Kenneth attended and graduated in the Class of 1943 from Iowa Wesleylan College at Mt. Pleasant, Iowa. He attended the U.S. Navy Mid-Shipman school at the Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. He served three years in the U.S. Navy. On July 7, 1946, he was united in marriage with Doris Waggoner in Sutherland, Iowa. The couple lived at Mt. Pleasant, where Kenneth was an instructor and coach at Iowa Wesleylan College for three years. The family then moved to Des Moines, where Kenneth attended Drake University and received his Masters Degree in Physical Education. Then, the family moved to Sibley, where he was a coach and teacher in the public schools. In 1953, the Porter family moved to Eagle Grove, where Ken was the Physical Education Instructor in the Eagle Grove Community Schools. For the past 14 years, he has been associated with the Iowa Central Community College as an instructor and department head. At the time of his death, Ken was the Head of the Education and Psychology and Physical Education Departments and was an Assistant Director of Athletics.

Mr. Porter died on Thursday afternoon, Aug. 5, 1982, at the Methodist Hospital in Rochester, Minn., after an illness with cancer. He attained the age of 60 years, 5 months and 9 days. He was a long-time member of the United Methodist Church, having served on the various boards and committees of the church. For several years, he was the Park Commissioner for the City of Eagle Grove. Kenneth had completed twenty years of service in the U.S. Naval Reserve Corps and recently had retired from the Reserve.

He is survived by his wife, Doris of Eagle Grove; two daughters, Alice and her husband, Joseph Pendergast of Omaha, Neb. and Carol Porter of Eagle Grove; two sons, Jack and his wife, Barbara Porter of Kingsley, Iowa; Gary Porter of Marshalltown, Iowa; four grandchildren, Melissa Porter, Kristin Porter, Timothy Pendergast and Steven Porter; a brother, Walter E. (Bud) Porter of Ashville, N.C.;.two sisters, Marion, Mrs. Keith McCreery of Sigourney, Iowa; Mildred, Mrs. Robert Coffey of Indianola, Iowa; 3 two sisters-in-laws, Mrs. Grace Porter of Ashville, N.C. and Mrs. Dorothy Newman of Agency, Iowa; and many other relatives and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, Clarence and Gene.

Funeral services for Kenneth R. Porter, were held on Monday, Aug 8, 1982 at 11 a.m. at the United Methodist Church in Eagle Grove Rev. Don Callen officiated and burial was in the Rose Hill Cemetery, Eagle Grove. Visitation was held at the Kastler-Babcock Funeral Home on Sunday.
