Martin Ferdinand Schaeferle was born October 3, 1887, at Merissa, Ill., the son of George and Mary Kime Schaeferle. He attended school at Biddleborn, Ill., and graduated from Telegraphers School at Valparaiso, Ind. He was employed by the Chicago and Northwestern Railroad from 1908 to 1952, beginning his employment in Eagle Grove, moving to Orange City and other communities before returning to Eagle Grove 30 years ago.

He was united in marriage to Sena Sliekers of Orange City, Ia., on October 4, 1910, at Orange City. The couple became the parents of three children, two of whom survive. Their daughter, Mary Alice died in infancy.

Mr. Schaeferle died at his home in Eagle Grove Thursday evening, August 22 at the age of 86 years, ten months and 19 days. He had been ill for several weeks prior to his death.

He is survived by his wife and two sons, Dr. Lawrence G. Schaeferle, Gladbrook and Dr. Martin J. Schaeferle, Chapel Hill, N. C. Also, seven grandchildren and nine great grandchildren.

Mr. Schaeferle was a member of the United Church of Christ, the Masonic Lodge, having received a life-membership after 50 years membership; The El Kahir Shrine; State lecturer and district instructor in Masonic Lodges; a member of the Modern Woodmen of America; and the Order of Railroad Telegraphers.

Funeral services were held Sunday, August 25 at 2 p.m. in the United Church of Christ, Eagle Grove. Rev. Emmett Braselton officiated and burial was in Rose Hill Cemetery. Masonic services were held at 8 p.m. at the Kastler-Babcock-DeYoung Funeral Home Saturday.
